Penn State Sorority Has Mexican Themed Party, Offends World

Ah, stereotypes. The thing about stereotypes is that they are mostly kinda true, which is why they are sometimes kinda funny. I mean, Asian ladies can’t drive well, Native Americans love alcohol and people in the Northwest are smug. It just is what it is.

However, people HATE when you take a stereotype and the stereotypee is nowhere to be found.

So, say you had a Mexican themed party like this Penn State sorority (which obviously doesn’t quite realize that their entire culture is under the microscope) for example. They had a Mexican themed party. Racist? Oh, hell ya. However, if they had ONE Mexican girl there… boom, problem solved.

The moral? Stereotypes are racist unless you know someone you are stereotyping who doesn’t mind to go along with the joke for a few hours. Then you’re just cutting edge.

A sorority having a Mexican-themed party seems harmless. But a Penn State sorority party photo surfaced Monday showing a group of girls wearing sombreros, ponchos and fake moustaches and holding signs saying “will mow lawn for weed” and “I don’t cut grass, I smoke it,” reports the Onward State.

The school’s newspaper the Daily Collegian reports the offensive photo reached the Penn State Penhellenic Council to investigate the Nu Gamma Chapter of Chi Omega who in turn issued an apology.  ”Our chapter of Chi Omega sincerely apologizes for portraying inappropriate and untrue stereotypes,” said the chapter’s head Jessica Riccardi.

The identity of the girls from the Chi Omega sorority were discovered because they were tagged on Facebook.  The students have not been disciplined yet since the case is still under investigation, reports Gawker. SOURCE: NBC Latino

Does anyone ever come across dumber than white sorority girls trying to do something funny?

I mean, sure, I get the point of sororities. It’s really hard to talk to people and make friends in college without paying money to do so. But, cmon ladies, what every student at Penn State should be doing right about now is just …. not drawing any attention to themselves for any reason. Even good ones. Just graduate and move away.
