Skate Park Gets Saved (Also, Hot Skater Chick Psychology)
I’m not a skater. In high school, all the skater guys were kinda what the Emo guys are now, except they didn’t seem to cry as much. Come to think of it, I don’t remember the skater guys (and girls) doing much actual skating. I think one time we went behind the Kmart for some reason or another and that was like their “headquarters” where they could skate off concrete steps and on rails and only occasionally be bothered by some Little Ceasar’s employee throwing out some trash.
I guess they were OK and all, just a bit anti-social and they didn’t seem to shower a lot and instead of whatever they listen to now it was a lot of NOFX and some other early skater era stuff. And there was ALWAYS that ONE skater chick that was super hot but was not interested in me even though I was like awesome and stuff. I was like, “why hang out with the skater dudes when you can hang out with me!?!?!” I guess I should ponder her decision a lot more before I move on in life, no?
That being said, I have really no idea what the skating subculture is like other than what I saw on Rob and Big, so I think I’m just going to go with that whole idea of it.
Apparently, however, today’s skaters stick together and get shit done, because, they got shit done last night in droves.
Three hours before Bethlehem City Council held its final budget hearing Tuesday, Homebase Skateshop owner Andrew Po got wind that council was considering cutting $546,000 designated next year for a new skate plaza — a move that would have devastated the project he has championed for nearly five years.
So, he started emailing local skaters and BMX bikers. He turned toFacebook,
MySpace and Twitter.
What he drummed up was one of the biggest turnouts the city has ever had at a final budget hearing. More than 100 young people — mostly dressed in sweatshirts, skull caps and a couple of polo shirts — filled the council room and spilled into the hallway.
They were successful in arguing to council to build the South Side park.
It will keep kids off the streets and become an East Coast destination as early as next summer, they said.
”That’s how close we are to opening the first phase,” Po said.
Six of seven council members agreed with Po and his supporters, keeping the project after a two-hour budget hearing. The hearing also included cutting three new police officer positions and adding a budget analyst for council into the proposed $71.6 million, no tax increase budget proposal. Source
Pretty sure that Trumps or equals the support for the Hot Dog man. As far as a skate park goes, I don’t see why people would think it’s a bad idea. I mean, if you’re all old and don’t like a certain sector of the population, isn’t the best recourse to put them in one location where you can keep an eye on them while they do ollies and umm… whatever else they do?
Oh, and back to skater chicks, I think what was hot about some of them was the fact that they were a bit low on self-esteem but still super hot… see, hot girls with low self-esteem are fun because they haven’t figured out they are hot yet. Once they figure out that they are hot, shit just goes downhill and they start fucking rich guys.
