Restaurant: “Gratuity Included in Check.” Students: Not If You Suck at Waitering

Ever read that note at the bottom of a check that reads “18% automatically gratuity on tables of 7 or more.” ? I mean, insert your own numbers depending on the establishtment, but this is a pretty standard practice and, for the most part, it makes logical sense.

See, you have to assume that some people are assholes and won’t tip. It happens a lot, but whatever, if you are a waitress or waiter and you got stiffed on a bill of $15, then oh well, you move on and try and recoup, it’s not like you wasted a lot of effort.

On big tables, however, you’re busting your butt to get all their drinks and shrimps and burgers and whatever else, so you’re investing the time and if they stiff, you, then that really sucks cause you had to work harder just because they were a large table, so the restaurant is like, NO WAY can you stff the waitress.

It’s their “Anti-Asshole” stipulation.

Well, a recent meal included that provision, however what happens if the waitress sucks? I mean, the automatic gratuity kind of doesn’t say anything about “only if your waitress is adequate.”

Moravian College senior Leslie Pope (Facebook Profile SHE’S CUTE!!!!) and John Wagner, a Lehigh University graduate student, were handcuffed and transported from the Lehigh Pub to Bethlehem police headquarters Oct. 23 after failing to pay a mandatory 18 percent gratuity.

Pope and Wagner, members of a party of eight during happy hour, refused to pay a $16.35 service charge on top of their $73.87 tab because of what they say was shoddy service as well as a surcharge that was nearly 5 percent higher than the 18 percent listed on the menu.

“Gratuity is thanking you for your service,” Pope, 22, said. “You can’t give us terrible, terrible service and expect a tip.”

The group reportedly had to wait more than an hour for salad and wings and had to approach the bar themselves for drink refills and find their own napkins and silverware as their waitress smoked outside.

The general manager of the Lehigh Pub, at 4 S. New St., declined to comment.

Like, if you took Pope out to eat and she didn’t like the service, she’s going to make sure that she GOES TO FUCKING JAIL before she spends another $13 on some bitch who was outside smoking when she should have been getting Pope and her peeps some fucking beers.
